Given the rise in shoplifting cases, Crime Prevention Bureau (CPB) held a workshop for the retail industry at the Police Officers’ Club on June 26 to strengthen the cooperation between the retail industry and the Force in tackling relevant crimes. In her opening speech, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Chung Wing-man thanked over 40 representatives from small, medium and large-sized retailers for their support. She remarked that there was a significant rise of shoplifting cases in the first four months this year. It was hoped that the Force could combat and prevent crimes effectively through close liaison with the industry and collecting their views. CPB officers firstly analysed the latest crime figures and trends. They then shared crime prevention advice and good practices of the industry. In the second session, officers from Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau and District Investigation Team of Yau Tsim District shared the latest technology crime information and successful cases in which shoplifting syndicates were combatted. The participants were satisfied with the content of the workshop and they would follow the advice of the Force to reduce the risk of being shoplifted.
CPB held a press conference at the Police Headquarters after the workshop. Officers explained the trends of shoplifting and miscellaneous thefts and the modus operandi often adopted. A retailer was also invited to share the experience of his shop being shoplifted, with a view to enhancing the awareness of the public and their knowledge of theft prevention. CPB encouraged the industry to use the latest electronic security devices for reducing risks and losses by means of technology. It was suggested that the industry should strengthen their security manpower. CPB also provided to the industry stickers themed with shoplifting prevention, and recommended that they be displayed on self-checkout kiosks to reduce the chances of shoplifting.
