April 21 was the last day of the Islamic month of Ramadan this year. Tai Po District (TPDIST) invited the non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) to come to Tai Po Police Station that evening to enjoy the important moment that marked the breaking of fast. District Commander of TPDIST Ma Wai-hing, retired Superintendent Mohammad Munir Khan, who grew up in the former police quarters at Fan Garden, and retired Station Sergeant Nazir Ahmad, together with the descendants of Pakistani police officers, gathered and talked about the good old days. Ma Wai-hing took the opportunity to encourage these youngsters to actively participate in community activities and support the Force.

The Force recruited police officers from Pakistan in the 50s and 60s. They were arranged to reside in the former police quarters at Fan Garden of Fanling, in which a mosque was built for them to pray. These Pakistani set roots in Hong Kong and their descendants would refer themselves as “Fanling Chai”. TPDIST has launched Project Engage, which aims to foster communication with the NEC community in the district, increase the channels of communication and establish a partnership for building a harmonious community together.
