The Force Working Group on Community Engagement (FWG) held the sixth half-yearly meeting with the chairpersons of the associations of heads of schools and Federations of Parent-teacher Associations (PTAs) in the Districts at the Police Headquarters on February 21 and 22 respectively. The meetings were chaired by Commissioner Siu Chak-yee and Director of Operations Chan Joon-sun. Each meeting was attended by around 20 chairpersons from each of the two associations, District Commanders and Police Community Relations Officers (PCROs) in the Districts, as well as officers from Crime Wing and Public Relations Wing.
In the opening speech, the Commissioner stated that there was a remarkable drop in the number of youth-related crimes in 2022. In particular, serious dangerous drug offences and robberies involving students fell by approximately 40 and 80 percent respectively. The figures showed that close collaboration among the Force and various stakeholders, including principals, teachers and parents, had achieved good effects, and that the students’ law-abiding awareness had been enhanced. He reminded everyone to keep up with their efforts.
The Commissioner also thanked all the principals and parents for supporting the Force’s commitments. Many schools invited members of the Force to participate in their career expos and meetings, resulting in more frequent collaboration between the Force and schools. However, he emphasised that persistent effort was required for nurturing young people, which was an essential commitment. He encouraged all principals and parents to share the Force’s messages with youngsters, and remarked that District management and PCROs would maintain liaison with schools and PTAs.
The participants expressed appreciation for the Force’s sustainable publicity efforts in crime prevention and child protection. After the meeting, the principals and parents went on a guided tour of the Cyber Range and listened to a report by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau on the latest trend of cyber crime and sharing of suggestions on preventing of online scams.
Since its establishment in early 2020, FWG has been endeavouring to build rapport with young people and strengthen public trust in the Force. The FWG also works hand in hand with youth workers to promote law-abiding awareness.
