To echo the psychological wellness programme “HERO—Healthy and Resilient Officer”, Psychological Services Group (PSG) held a Balances and Wisdom seminar at the Police Headquarters on February 7. Head Coach of the Hong Kong Women’s Table Tennis Team Mr Li Ching was invited to share his experience and feeling in the table tennis arena over the last three decades. The seminar was hosted by the representatives from the Police Table Tennis Club. Having “bat-started” the event with Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chan Man-tak, Coach Li played a friendly match with Chief Superintendent of Personnel Services and Staff Relations Lee Chung-wah. Around 100 Force members and retired officers, as well as their family members and friends, attended the seminar.
Coach Li shared the stories of sweating blood behind his achievements. Out of his passion in table tennis, he dedicated wholeheartedly to training since his youth. He trained for longer time than everyone else every day. He also shared that the key to his success laid in paying attention to detail, understanding the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, and preparing well for every match physically and mentally. Having confronted with turmoil and adversities in life, he commented that willpower, perseverance and self-discipline were the crucial qualities that kept him going. He would not give up easily in face of adversity. Coach Li also said that his team of sports psychologists described him as “having low frustration tolerance”, meaning that it was harder for him to tolerate failure emotionally than normal players, which in turn affected his performance in subsequent matches. Under the assistance of his team, Coach Li learnt to transform his failure into motivation through positive self-reflection for improvement.
The participants actively took part in the Q&A session and they found the seminar inspiring. A video clip of the seminar is available on P-TV for colleagues to watch. Force members are welcome to contact PSG at 2866-6206 for enquiry or appointment.
