Kowloon East Region (KE) and Tseung Kwan O District (TKODIST) have set up the “Hong Kong Drifters’ Report Room” (“Report Room”), a WeChat communication group, since December 2021. The students and staff of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology are invited to join the group, in which latest crime news is disseminated and scam tricks are shared, with enquiries about suspected deception cases instantly answered and assistance provided. The number of group members has increased to 1 800. Five deception cases involving about eight million have been incepted successfully through the WeChat group. In September, a mainland student of HKUST encountered a telephone deception case involving impersonated officials. He subsequently found the case suspicious and sought help from the “Report Room”. The WeChat communication succeeded in preventing him from financial losses. KE and TKODIST will keep stepping up anti-deception publicity in the region and district to protect citizens’ property.
