EDIST

An 80-year-old singleton male went to the North Point Police Station on July 14 and reported that he was defrauded in a telephone scam in which someone impersonated a government official. Finding that the old man could not speak Cantonese, the Report Room officer asked him about details of the incident in fluent Mandarin and handed over the case to District Investigation Team (DIT) 4 of Eastern District (EDIST) for follow-up.

Officers of DIT 4 noticed that the elderly was emotionally excited. Therefore, they pacified him patiently first before recording the incident carefully. They even offered dim sum to the starving old man. The officers maintained close contact with him subsequently to explain the relevant procedures and inform him of the case progress. They also took the initiative to ask his daughter if the victim needed any help from social workers when he was alone in Hong Kong. With the concerted efforts of various departments, most of the money involved were quickly intercepted. The officers immediately notified the old man and explained to him the procedures for recovering the money.

The old man wrote a complement letter afterwards to praise the police officers of their professional performance. He said that he felt helpless as his wife and children were not in Hong Kong when the case happened. It was lucky of him to be listened to and cared by the officers. He was deeply moved by their professionalism and meticulous care.

Officers handle cases of different nature every day. As long as they apply empathy when serving the citizens wholeheartedly, they will gain public support for the Force.
