To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and centenary of the old Yau Ma Tei Police Station (YMTPS), the Force is holding open days on August 6, 7, 13 and 14 under the theme “Policing with the community over 100 years”. Three colleagues who were stationed at the old YMTPS at different times took this opportunity to share their experiences.
Probationary Inspector of Patrol Sub-unit (PSU) 3 of
Yau Ma Tei Division (YMTDIV) Toby Tsang
After graduating from the Hong Kong Police College (HKPC) in April 2022, Toby was posted to YMTDIV. Toby’s father is a retiree having served in the Force for more than 38 years. Under his influence, Toby aspired to join the Force since his childhood. Coincidentally, Toby’s father was also attached to PSU 3 of YMTDIV after graduation from HKPC years ago.
Toby is currently working at the new YMTPS. “The police station has changed, and so has Yau Ma Tei. What remain unchanged are my father’s teachings in those years. My original aspiration to become a police officer has never altered or faltered. I have successfully realised my childhood dream, and I will continue my father’s ambition to serve the Force with all my might to fight crime in YMTDIV.”

Leung’s childhood was spent in Yau Ma Tei, and so was most of his police career in YMTDIV. Witnessing the changes in the community over the years, he said, “In the early 1990s, Yau Ma Tei was a round-the-clock destination attracting many citizens and tourists. The crowds, however, also created security problems. The Force has been taking the initiative to keep in touch with local people for improving community security jointly.”
Leung has a deep memory of combating illegal street gambling. “I was attached to District Special Duties Squad of Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) between 2008 and 2009. After a round of strategic actions, we succeeded in cracking down on gambling establishments. After ambushing in the streets for a long time and disguising as drug addicts to arrest suspected drug dealers, we successfully blocked street drug activities and created a safe living environment for the citizens.”

Sergeant See Chun-pong
After graduating from HKPC in 2007, See Chun-pong was attached to PSU YMTDIV. In 2009, the old YMTPS was rated as a Grade II Historic Building. Chun-pong was stationed in YTDIST in 2012, and was lucky enough to serve as the flag bearer at the “retirement” ceremony of the old YMTPS in May 2016, bringing the old police station to a perfect end.
After being promoted to sergeant, Chun-pong was stationed in the YMTDIV in 2020 and worked in the new YMTPS. The nine-storey new YMTPS features green space and energy-saving installations. Various facilities there have also been upgraded, thereby improving the officers’ efficiency and promoting the Force’s image.
