To enhance the coordination and response capabilities of various formations in handling public events, suspicious objects and terrorism activities, as well as preparing for the security operations in relation to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Airport District (APTDIST) and Airport Security Unit (ASU), together with the Contingency Response Unit (CRU) and Airport Canine Unit (ACU) of the Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) conducted the joint counter-terrorism exercise codenamed “HURRICANE” at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on June 15.
The exercise simulated a scenario in which CRU members encountered resistance when they tried to remove a group of protestors they had stopped at the terminal. The Force eventually stepped in and arrested those who refused to cooperate. In another scenario, HKIA received a bomb-threatening email and the Force immediately conducted a sweep with CRU at the terminal. A suspicious luggage was found, with all passengers evacuated. The officers and ACU then confirmed that the luggage was a suspicious bomb and relevant procedures were activated. Subsequent to the resumption of normal business at the terminal, one terrorist carrying a gun attacked the visitors. Officers of ASU arrived at the scene promptly to subdue the terrorist.
Throughout the joint exercise, APTDIST, ASU, CRU and ACU demonstrated their capabilities in handling emergencies. APTDIST will keep communicating with the airport community to ensure HKIA being one of the safest airports worldwide.
