SSPODIST
To enhance the emergency response capability in the community, Sham Shui Po District (SSPODIST) and Society for Community Organization (SoCO) organised a lockdown exercise at a modular social housing in Cheung Sha Wan on May 21. The exercise aimed to boost the residents’ awareness of risks and response capability by simulating suspicious persons intruding residential premises for attack.
Officers of SSPODIST initially taught the residents and security guards survival skills during an attack to enhance their awareness of “Run, Hide, Report” and “Spot and Report”. During the exercise, participants had to apply the skills they had learned to handle invasion by intruders, and they were also required to identify whether the risk had been defused. More than 90 residents joined the drill.
In addition to the auxiliary officers of SSPODIST and mentees of the Police Mentorship Programme (Outreach) who helped organise the event, non-ethnic Chinese students who had joined a previous school lockdown exercise also provided assistance actively by rendering interpretation service voluntarily.
The participating residents said that the skills they learned in the exercise could be applied to reduce their chances of being injured in future emergencies. Deputy Director of SoCO Ms Sze Lai-shan indicated that the residents could be educated in the exercise about potential risks in the community, the vigilance of security guards could be tested, and their emergency response capability had been enhanced.
TWDIST
Tsuen Wan District (TWDIST) launched various publicity and education campaigns between May and June to enhance the public’s safety awareness against anti-terrorism activities. In addition to issuing the “Run, Hide, Report” guideline on handling emergency in its online social media, TWDIST officers distributed leaflets to the residents in the district and went to local schools to brief the teachers and students on cyberterrorism so that the latter’s sense against terrorism would be strengthened.
TWDIST hopes that the array of publicity and promotion efforts can allow the public to identify suspicious situations in their daily life and report them as soon as practicable so as to assist in preventing and combating terrorism. TWDIST will continue joining hands with the citizens to safeguard the community and ensure public safety.
