Station Sergeant Wong Chung-fai joined the Force in 1981 and retired in 2018. Taking pride in his career as a policeman, he sought to become a member of the Force again under the re-employment plan in 2019. Soon after Fai joined the Force again, COVID-19 wreaked havoc in Hong Kong. To contribute his effort in fighting the epidemic, he took part in the Police Anti-Coronavirus Contingent (PACC) without hesitation in 2020.
PACC, comprising about 200 serving and retired officers, was formed to assist the Civil Aid Service (CAS) in managing community isolation facilities and to provide assistance to the needy at border control points. Fai was assigned to help CAS members take care of occupants in Lei Yue Mun Park Quarantine Centre. His duties included delivering logistics and meals to the isolated, and accompanying them for medical consultation.
Due to the short supply of personal protective equipment at the initial stage of the epidemic, members of PACC drank less water to minimise consumption of protective gears. They would sanitise themselves thoroughly in Police stations before returning home to avoid spreading the virus to their family members. Joining PACC was voluntary. In addition to the duties in their own posts, members needed to sacrifice their personal time to perform the difficult and complicated tasks of the Contingent. Fai, however, never thinks that joining the anti-epidemic team is asking for trouble. All he hopes is to make contribution to the fight against the epidemic.
Fai, as a member of PACC, is the first re-employed officer awarded with Commanding Officer’s Commendation. “Having reached the retirement age, I care little about fame and fortune. I only look forward to serving the society, and hope this award can encourage young colleagues to gain more through working harder.” Looking back into the past, Fai found that he always tried to find out the truth by looking into minor details, regardless of the significance of the cases. He enjoys the sense of success in his work, and therefore advises that his young colleagues adore the sense of achievement brought by police work. Only when they stop measuring the efforts made against the returns received will their police career be more meaningful.
