Among the increased telephone deception cases targeting the elderly, a considerable number of them involved taxis, in addition to the usual modus operandi (MO) of “Guess Who I Am” and scammers purporting to be relatives of the victims. Scammers would instruct the elderly to take a taxi and hand over their phones to the taxi driver for delivery of cash at a designated place. In view of this, Kwai Tsing District (KWTDIST) filmed an anti-deception video with the support of the KWTDIST Senior Police Call (SPC) and the taxi industry on April 7 for dissemination to taxi drivers so that they can grasp this MO and help prevent crime.
The filming would not have been successful without the support of the manager of the Motor Transport Workers General Union (Kowloon branch)
Mr To Sun-tong, who lent his taxi to the crew and played the role of a taxi driver in the video. Mr To said, “It is very meaningful to contribute to this anti-deception video for the elderly. Shortly after the video was launched, taxi drivers were responsive and said they would keep vigilant during work.”
A member of KWTDIST SPC Ms Lee Siu-yee also played an acting role in the video, she shared, “As an elderly person, I feel sorry if other members of the elderly lose their lifelong savings in scams. We SPC members, just like members of the public, shall fight crime along with the Force. This filming fully demonstrates the good Police-public cooperation.”
