The Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) is launching its “Anti-Deception Season” publicity campaign from May to August entitled “Beware of scams, Keep your property safe”. The publicity campaign features different prevalent fraud cases as the theme for each month to enhance the public’s understanding of scammers’ modus operandi and raise the anti-deception awareness among the public.
The most prevalent modus operandi of telephone deception seen recently is impersonating government officials to cheat members of the public out of their personal and online banking information in the name of quarantine arrangement or investigation into illegal import of vaccines. Therefore, the focus of the publicity campaign in May is to raise public awareness against telephone deception. The “King of Phone Scams”, a character created by ADCC, will be shown via TV and Radio Announcements in the Public Interest (APIs), Internet, social media platforms, large outdoor advertising spaces and advertisements on public transports to raise the public’s anti-deception awareness.
Other three characters, namely “Love Player” who cheats people of their money and love, “Fake Job Master” who deceives job seekers and “Phishing Agent” who collects personal data through phishing SMS messages, links or emails, will come into play one by one from June to August in a bid to heighten the public’s anti-deception awareness against romance scam cum investment fraud, employment fraud and phishing scam. ADCC has also created a scam character called “App Cheater”, who deceives victims through fake investment applications. ADCC has also produced a promotional video for this character. Stay tuned for the screenings.
Given the tightly interwoven offences of money laundering and frauds, the Financial Intelligence and Investigation Bureau will launch a series of anti-money laundering publicity activities in the “Anti-Deception Season” with a view to reminding the public to secure their banking login credentials and passwords, refrain from revealing the information to strangers and selling their account credentials to others for money.
In the light of the epidemic, ADCC will disseminate the most updated anti-deception information to members of the public remotely through various platforms during the “Anti-Deception Season”. Besides, ADCC will continue to step up public education. Please call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” for assistance if members of the public suspect that they have fallen prey to a scam.
