In order to enhance the security response capability and support frontline officers, Airport District (APTDIST) launched the Airport Auxiliary Police Pilot Scheme in December 2021.

Since December 11, 2021, the auxiliary participants of the scheme have been on duty on Saturdays and Sundays in APTDIST, including the restricted areas, to conduct beat patrols and handle cases with regular officers. The scheme has not only broadened the scope of policing work of the auxiliary officers, but also enhanced their understanding of the security of the airport’s critical infrastructure for effective deployment in case of emergencies.

Earlier on November 28, 2021, APTDIST and New Territories South Region (Auxiliary) conducted a briefing on the scheme for nearly 80 auxiliary officers from Tsuen Wan District (TWDIST) and Kwai Tsing District. The event included a visit to the Airport Police Station and a briefing session on the policing characteristics, the uniqueness of APTDIST’s cases, relevant laws and liaison with airport law enforcement agencies, so as to increase the auxiliary officers’ understanding of the special operations of APTDIST. A field visit to important facilities and security points was also arranged to enhance their emergency response capability. Through the tour to the airport epidemic prevention facilities, the auxiliary officers gained a better understanding of the important work of APTDIST officers as the gatekeepers for the epidemic prevention at the airport. Afterwards, Chief Inspector (Operations) of APTDIST Wong Yuet-chi conducted a question and answer session, during which the auxiliary officers were proactive in asking questions.

One of the participants of the scheme, Auxiliary Police Constable Tsui from TWDIST said that the work at APTDIST is unique, such as providing assistance at the headquarters of the Government Flying Service, patrolling in the restricted areas of the airport, and assisting in handling persons under hotel quarantine. The scheme has enabled him to enrich his policing knowledge and provide support for regular officers.

Auxiliary Police Constable Ah Lok from TWDIST said that the airport has become the first line of defence in Hong Kong during the pandemic. He felt honoured to participate in the scheme and work in APTDIST. The work in APTDIST is challenging and completely different from that of other police districts. He also had the opportunity to work with officers of the Airport Security Unit and he benefited a lot from the experience.
