The Family Conflict and Sexual Violence Policy Unit of the Crime Support Group held an opening ceremony to launch a seven-week “Let’s T.A.L.K.” Child Protection Campaign at the Police Sports and Recreation Club on October 10.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Siu Chak-yee said that there was a sharp increase of child abuse cases in the first eight months of this year, a rise of nearly 70 per cent as compared with the same period last year. He stressed that the Police attach great importance to protecting children from harm and abuse. Through the campaign, it is hoped that the public could understand that individual effort is inadequate to safeguard the well-being of children, and their joint efforts with the relevant organisations and sectors are crucial in protecting children’s safety and welfare.

At the ceremony, the Commissioner appointed three officiating guests as the ambassadors of the Child Protection Campaign, including the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Mr Bernard Chan; the President of the Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association, Mr Karson Choi; and the Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Mr Kenneth Fok. The ambassadors also shared their experience in child protection at the ceremony.

Jumping Jacks Challenge

The campaign is being held from October 10 to November 27. It comprises a series of activities to foster parent-child relationship and relieve parental stress in child raising. The highlight of the campaign is the “Jumping Jacks Challenge Video Clip Contest”, which encourages the public to participate in jumping jacks, a type of physical exercise. Participants are required to form a group of two or more, preferably with one of the participants aged under 16, and submit creative jumping jacks video clips incorporating a child protection slogan to compete for 20 awards. The campaign aims to collect at least 1120 short video clips to set a world record in support of the World Children’s Day on November 20.

Other programmes of the campaign include the “Parent-Child Colouring and Slogan Design Contest”, “Let’s T.A.L.K. Child Protection Seminar” and the launch of the “One-stop Child Protection Web Application” (www.ChildProtection.gov.hk) to share child protection related knowledge and information.
