As a brand-new initiative to engage with students, the Force Working Group on Community Engagement (FWG) has partnered with the Law Society of Hong Kong (Law Society) to organise a series of visits to police units and sharing sessions for participants of “Teen Talk”, a legal education programme of the Law Society. In May, students and lawyers visited Crime Wing, Marine Region, Airport District (APTDIST), the Police Tactical Unit, the Counter-Terrorism Response Unit and the Police Public Relations Branch.

On May 15, the participants visited the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau and the Family Conflict and Sexual Violence Policy Unit to learn about the latest crime trends and crime prevention information. Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Yip Wan-lung introduced the challenging criminal investigation work to the students and encouraged them to join the Force after graduation. The President of the Law Society Ms Melissa Pang thanked the Force for arranging the visits and invited veteran police officers to share key crime information and frontline policing experience with lawyers in the future.

On May 23, Deputy Commissioner (Operations) Siu Chak-yee delivered a speech to the participants during the visit to APTDIST. He said that legal professionals are vital working partners of the Force. The Force thanked the Law Society for organising the events to boost students’ legal knowledge and law-abiding awareness. The Force hoped the visits could raise the transparency of police work and enhance students’ understanding of the rationales and procedures of law enforcement. The visits also allowed young people to experience the training and hard work required to be a professional police officer.

The FWG will continue to organise visits to other police units, such as the Police Dog Unit, for representatives of the Law Society, participants of “Teen Talk” and Junior Police Call members to enhance their understanding of police work.
