During the five consecutive public holidays in early April, more than 1 000 auxiliary police officers were on duty each day to support the work of regular police officers.
Acting Inspector of Police (Auxiliary) Chu Ka-chun joined the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force (HKAPF) in 2013 through the Auxiliary Undergraduate Scheme. During his seven years of service with the HKAPF, Mr Chu turned out for both Operation SOLARPEAK and Operation TIDERIDER to support regular officers. During Operation TIDERIDER, Mr Chu assisted regular officers on the front line to clear roadblocks and defend police stations and police quarters. He said, “These experiences have made me more determined to contribute even more to society and protect Hong Kong.” Later, he applied for the promotion of Inspector of Police (Auxiliary). After a series of interviews and assessments, he was admitted to a 36-week Inspector of Police (Auxiliary) Promotion Course in December 2020.
On April 2, the Auxiliary Support Bureau arranged a one-day leadership training workshop for the trainees of the Inspector of Police (Auxiliary) Promotion Course. On their way back from a hike through Nam Long Shan Road, they met a boy who had fallen over and injured both his knees. Mr Chu immediately treated the boy’s wounds with the first aid supplies he carried with him. The boy’s family thanked him for his assistance. He said, “Helping others always makes me feel proud. It makes me even more determined to continue my path in the HKAPF.”
Mr Chu is a building services engineer by profession and his daily work is rather arduous. Despite the physical and mental exhaustion, he spends his spare time to perform police duties. Appreciation from members of the public is his driving force for embracing challenges and serving society. As the HKAPF needs the support of general public, Mr Chu often introduces the work of the HKAPF to his friends and relatives. With his encouragement, his wife has become an auxiliary police officer. Two of his colleagues have also applied to join the HKAPF and are currently undergoing the selection process. He hopes that more people would join the HKAPF to safeguard Hong Kong.
