Since 2015, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau has co-organised the biggest digital forensics competition in China, the China Digital Forensics Competition, also known as the Meiya Cup, together with the Criminal Investigation Police University of China, a Mainland enterprise and the University of Hong Kong.

The Sixth Meiya Cup was held in Xiamen, China from November 13 to 15. More than 1 200 students from criminal investigation colleges across the country and professionals joined the competition. CSTCB officers were invited to prepare questions for the competition and the relevant forensics images. They also monitored the process of the competition at the CSTCB’s Cyber Range and served as judges.

This year, the simulated scenario involved the infiltration and attack of the system of a multi-platform e-commerce company, which led to the theft of personal financial data. It also involved money laundering activities using fintech and cryptocurrency. Participants were tasked with obtaining digital evidence, analysing data from digital devices, and reconstructing the facts of the case.

The Hong Kong Police Force has been continually invited to prepare questions and serve as judges for the Meiya Cup. It shows that the Force has established a leading position in the field of digital forensics. The CSTCB will continue to promote the development of digital forensics by organising similar activities.
