The Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) of the Commercial Crime Bureau seeks to solicit support from different sectors of the community in the promotion of anti-deception messages. Given the increase in number of telephone deception targeting senior citizens, ADCC designed anti-telephone deception leaflets in August for foreign domestic helpers who are the main caregivers of the elderly and joined hands with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Hong Kong in September to disseminate preventive messages on telephone deception to Indonesian domestic helpers working locally. The Indonesian Consul also visited gathering places of Indonesian domestic helpers during holidays to distribute anti-deception leaflets to the helpers.
On September 25, Chief Inspector Ngan Hoi-ian and Inspector Lam Pui-hang of ADCC conducted a live broadcast with the Indonesian Consul via the Facebook Page of the Consulate General to brief Indonesian domestic helpers on defrauding tricks of “Pretend Officials” telephone deception and online romance scams as well as ways to distinguish whether the victims have fallen prey to scams by spotting any sudden change of the victims’ habits.
ADCC hoped that by promoting the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” and reminding Indonesian domestic helpers to stay vigilant against scams through the live webcast, the helpers would be able to help their employers, especially the elderly, to guard against telephone deception. Meanwhile, the domestic helpers were advised not to provide personal accounts to fraudsters for money laundering. The webcast also featured a real-time question and answer session during which viewers could communicate with the officers of ADCC.
