The Marine Regional Radio Workshop of Communications Branch (COMMS) of Information Systems Wing (ISW) at Stonecutters Island has recently been renovated and equipped with new facilities that can record the movement of police launches and vessels that require servicing in order to improve COMMS’s operational efficiency. The workshop provides technical support to the whole Marine Region including various sea monitoring systems in its command and control centre and all electronic navigation equipment aboard 115 police launches and vessels.

Assistant Commissioner (Information Systems) (ACP IS) Kwan Chui-ching visited the workshop on October 8 to meet the workshop staff and inspect the new facilities.

Workshop staff mainly carry out outdoor maintenance and repair of radio and electronic navigation equipment deployed in various types of police launches and vessels. With the three newly installed 55-inch dashboards, staff can easily acquire details of their daily tasks at a glance. The electronic displays provide information about in / out dock of police vessels and the type of equipment that require servicing, as well as the locations where COMMS technicians need to travel to for the repair work if the vessels cannot return to the dockyard.

Since most activities are carried out in coastal environment, occupational safety and health issues cannot be ignored. The displays show instant weather information to let staff know the latest conditions, forecasts or warnings to enable them to bring the appropriate personal protective equipment to conduct their outdoor duties. Besides, a new 86-inch Smartboard has been put in place to enhance training capability for the workshop staff on the repair of specialised equipment such as radars and electronic navigational chart display systems.

The workshop is situated in the Government Dockyard nearby the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works. To improve indoor air quality, which could be an unpleasant issue in the summer time, all air conditioning facilities have been upgraded and a number of air purifiers have also been added to the workplace. “With the workplace environment improved and new facilities added, the overall morale, work efficiency and performance of the workshop staff have greatly improved”, said workshop manager Senior Police Telecommunications Inspector Chan Chi-hung.

During the visit, ACP IS presented a retirement souvenir to Police Telecommunications Inspector Li Hon-man to express her appreciation and gratitude for his 33-plus years of loyal service to the Force.
