The Law of the People’s Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is in force and the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) established the National Security Department on July 1, 2020. The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, appointed Ms Lau Chi-wai as Deputy Commissioner of Police (National Security) on July 3 to head the department.

With the establishment of the National Security Department, the number of officers of the HKPF’s top management, comprising the Commissioner and the Senior Directorate Group (SDG), has increased to ten. The HKPF will continue to professionally discharge its duties to uphold the rule of law and maintain law and order as well as social stability.
