Mong Kok District (MKDIST) Commander Bradley Wright, Deputy Commander Yu Hoi-kwan and officers of the Police Community Relations Office visited the newly built Ibrahim Mosque at Ferry Street on June 2. They aimed to familiarise themselves with the operations of the mosque and conduct a cultural exchange.
The mosque locates at the junction of Ferry Street and Shantung Street under the West Kowloon Corridor. It comprises a male prayer room, a female prayer room and two children reading rooms. The person-in-charge Mr Mohammad Ilyas stated that the construction work of the mosque was almost completed, and it was opened to worshippers to pray. During the visit, the commanders came to know that Mr Ilyas funded the construction work of the mosque, hoping to serve the ethinic minorities in Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Sham Shui Po by providing them a convenient place to pray.
Besides, Mr Ilyas and the imam of the mosque Mr Muhammad Zubair shared halal food with the officers and talked about the religious history, food culture and rituals of Pakistan. They also exchanged views with the officers on helping ethnic minorities to integrate into the community. They opined that “Project RING”, which is implemented in MKDIST mainly for ethnic minority females and their children, effectively strengthened communication and mutual trust between ethinic minroites and the community, and helped them integrate into the society. The community information translated into Urdu by the Force particularly facilitated the daily lives of the ethnic minorities. Mr Ilyas and Mr Zubair agreed to stay in close contact with MKDIST and jointly promote racial harmony. They will also assist MKDIST officers in setting up a recruitment booth for “Project RING” and a district information corner at the entrance of the mosque later on.
Before concluding the visit, the commanders gave Mr Ilyas a compliment on his care for the ethnic minorities, effort to facilitate racial harmony and contributions to the society. The commanders also stated that the visit effectively strengthened the communication between MKDIST and the mosque. They wished to maintain a closer cooperation with the mosque in the future, in order to recruit more ethnic minorities to join “Project RING”.
