In order to enhance public awareness of telephone deception, particularly among elderly groups, the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon East (RCPO KE) has invited artiste Ms Bonnie Chu and a member of the Kwun Tong Senior Police Call to film a video to promote prevention of telephone deception. The video aims at encouraging the public to enhance communication with their elderly family members and to educate them on possible ways to prevent the elderly from falling victim to telephone deception.
In the video, Ms Chu plays a daughter who comes up with a code word only known between her and her mother for verifying the identity of dubious callers. When a swindler calls the mother and claims to be her daughter asking for monetary help, the mother asks the caller for the code word. When the caller fails to provide the code word, the mother would know that the caller is not her daughter, thereby avoiding a telephone deception attempt.
In addition, the RCPO KE has invited Mr Chong, a popular YouTuber known as “Chong San”, to record an audio clip to remind the public to beware of telephone deception. With a view to drawing the public’s attention, particularly the younger generation, the RCPO KE has produced an animation to go with Mr Chong’s signature voiceover.
In the voiceover, Mr Chong introduces the prevalent telephone deception modi operandi and reminds the public to stay vigilant and not to fall prey to suspicious callers’ requests for money or bank account details.
