In contrary to the hustle and bustle of our big city, some vulnerable groups are still struggling to make ends meet. In the central business district of Central, some senior citizens can only rely on scavenging to make a living.
On the afternoon of June 6, while Tier 3 officers of Central District (CDIST) were responding to a call of “Vehicle Obstruction” at Ice House Street, they saw an old lady pushing a cart full of cardboard at the junction of Pedder Street and Queen’s Road Central. When the old lady was crossing the road, the cardboard accidentally fell and was scattered on the carriageway. The officers, without a second thought, picked up the cardboard and assisted the old lady to return to the pavement.
Apart from conducting high-risk patrol, handling 999 calls and carrying out anti-crime operations, Tier 3 officers are always ready to serve citizens in need. This is the core value of the Force and the epitome of our aspiration to become police officers.
Recounting the incident, one of the officers said, “It was drizzling at that time. The old lady looked helpless when the cardboard fell on the carriageway. We just wanted to offer a helping hand. The old lady sent the cardboard to a nearby recycler every day to make a living. We were just doing what we are supposed to do. It gave us great satisfaction when we saw the smile of the old lady.”
A small role? But profound impact! Everyone can help build a more cordial and harmonious city by walking an extra mile and showing empathy.
