In response to the cyber threats which arose amid the COVID-19 pandemic, INTERPOL launched a global awareness campaign on cyber security in May. In support of INTERPOL’s campaign, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) organised Cyber Security Month in May to conduct a series of activities to promote cyber security and combat cyber attacks, with a view to safeguarding cyber security in Hong Kong.
On May 8, the CSTCB collaborated with the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Centre to conduct “Build a Secure Cyberspace 2020 - Cyber Security Challenges in the Pandemic” Webinar, which attracted 270 participants from small and medium enterprises, schools, government departments, non-governmental organisations and the information technology industry.
Later on May 13, the CSTCB joined hands with the Regional Crime Prevention Offices of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon East to hand out leaflets to members of the public to disseminate cyber security and anti-deception information. Cyber security tools, such as camera blockers, were also distributed to enhance information security awareness of the public.
To combat malicious domains, the CSTCB conducted Operation PRESSWIND between May 14 and 20. During the operation, the CSTCB contacted 62 internet service providers and visited 16 data centres, and maintained close liaison with the information technology industry, combated and removed 713 phishing websites and botnet domains registered in Hong Kong so as to safeguard local cyber security. During the gathering of intelligence, the CSTCB also identified 79 139 overseas phishing websites and botnet domains. The intelligence was handed over to INTERPOL’s Malicious Domain Task Force for further action.
To further promote cyber security, the CSTCB conducted a press interview on May 20 during which Superintendent of the Cyber Security Division Lam Cheuk-ho talked about the modus operandi of recent cyber security-related cases. As no mobile application is perfectly safe, Mr Lam reminded members of the public to keep their applications up-to-date and configure the security settings properly. Inspector Yuen Hei also gave an overview on the details and outcome of Operation PRESSWIND. Finally, Chief Inspector Wong Ching-han concluded the interview with security tips – Cyber Security “NET” (“Network protection”, “Enhanced alertness against phishing websites” and “Timely updates of anti-virus software”), to remind the public of the importance of safeguarding cyber security.
