Senior Superintendent (SSP) Ho Kai-hin and Chief Inspector (CIP) Ian Wilson from the Auxiliary Support Bureau visited the Auxiliary Police Section of New York Police Department (NYPD) from March 2 to 7.
The goal of the visit was to share experience with the Auxiliary Police Section, which performs responsibilities similar to those of the Auxiliary Support Bureau of the Force in terms of management and training of auxiliary police force.
Although wearing a uniform similar to that of the regulars, the NYPD Auxiliary Police are unpaid, unarmed and have no constabulary powers. Instead, their primary roles are community engagement, crowd management, traffic control, and acting as the "eyes and ears" of the NYPD.
SSP Ho and CIP Wilson also visited the NYPD Auxiliary Police in the Chinatown in downtown Manhattan, the Transit Bureau in Brooklyn, which is similar to the Railway District, and the Citywide Traffic Task Force at Times Square in uptown Manhattan. The visit acquainted officers with the initiatives taken by the Auxiliary Police Section on recruitment and deployment of the NYPD Auxiliary Police.
